How the designer works

01

Drag it to size

Pull the round handles to set the width, the depth and the wall height. The shed redraws as you go, and it stops at the sizes the framing can carry.

02

Doors and windows anywhere

Click a wall to add a door or window, drag it along the wall, resize it from its edges or move it to another wall. Each opening keeps the room its king and jack studs need.

03

Checked spans

Rafter, joist and header sizes are checked in bending and deflection with NDS design values for Spruce-Pine-Fir No. 2 at the snow load you pick.

04

What to buy

The materials list packs every piece onto 8, 10, 12 and 16 ft boards and precut studs, buys trim in 8, 12 and 16 ft, and counts the sheets, roofing, nails and hardware in the units stores sell. Walls default to the height one 4x8 siding panel covers; raise them and you pick between a Z-flashed joint and 4x9 panels.

Width, depth and the roof

Width is the front wall, the one with the door. On a gable shed the ridge runs front to back, so the front and back are the gable ends and the rafters sit on the side walls. On a lean-to the front wall is the tall one and the roof slopes to the back, so doors go on the front, where there is head room.

What it does not know

Your soil, your wind exposure, your frost depth and your local amendments to the code. Use the plan to price and cut the job, and check it against what your building department requires. The permit guide covers what to ask, and the free shed plans cover the common sizes.
