Gable shed plans

16 free gable plans, from a 6x6 to a 12x24 and a 16x20, each drawn by the same shed designer that checks the rafters and packs the cut list onto standard boards. Every plan has the framing for each wall, the rafter pattern, a cut list, a shopping list and a PDF. Open any of them in the designer to change the size, the pitch or the doors.

When a gable roof makes sense

A gable roof slopes both ways from a ridge down the middle of the shed. On our plans the ridge runs front to back, so both side walls stay at full height along the whole depth and carry the rafters, and the door goes in a gable end. The default 6/12 pitch puts the ridge of the 10x12 123-5/8" above the sole plate; the designer also draws 4/12 and 5/12.

It suits a deeper or wider shed. A lean-to drops its back wall by the slope over the depth, so our lean-to plans stop at 8 ft deep, while the gable plans run to 24 ft deep and 16 ft wide. It is also the easier roof to shingle: at 4/12 and steeper, asphalt shingles go on over one layer of underlayment, where a lean-to at 2/12 or 3/12 needs two.

What it costs you is a few more cuts: every rafter has a plumb cut at the ridge and a birdsmouth at the wall, each pair needs a rafter tie, and the gable triangles need their own studs and siding. The shed roof guide walks through the ridge, the rafters and the rake trim, and trusses vs rafters compares the two ways to frame it.

What the materials cost

Each gable plan's shopping list priced on Sep 30, 2026, before sales tax and delivery. Shed materials are the building itself; the gravel base is site prep and has its own column. The 10x12 came to $3,080.73 in shed materials on 33 of 33 lines, plus $737.58 for the gravel base in bags. The full breakdown by size and by group is on the cost to build a shed page, and the shed cost calculator lets you type your own store's prices.

Quantities from the shed designer for each free plan. Shed materials is the shed itself: lumber, sheet goods, roofing, fasteners and hardware, and the foundation parts (skids or blocks, anchors, landscape fabric), before sales tax and delivery. Prices: Home Depot, Bronx Terminal store, captured Sep 30, 2026, except Z-flashing and 16 ft skids, priced at Home Depot, Hamilton Mill store (ZIP 30011) the same day, so every row mixes the two stores. The gravel base is site prep and stays out of that total: it is priced in 0.5 cu ft bags at Home Depot, Hamilton Mill store (ZIP 30011), and bulk from a landscape or building supplier is typically cheaper (East Coast Lumber & Building Supply, East Hampstead, NH, listed 3/4 in crushed stone at $69.95 per cubic yard on Sep 30, 2026, delivered in loads of 3 to 8 yards). Prices change by store and by day.

Questions people ask

Our 10x12 shed plan is 10 ft wide and 12 ft deep, with 7' 4-3/4" walls and a 6/12 roof that peaks 11' 3-3/8" above the ground. It sits on 4 pressure-treated 4x6 skids with 10 2x6 floor joists, and the roof is 20 2x6 rafters at 16 in on center, a 2x8 ridge board and a 2x4 rafter tie at every pair. The walls take 14 sheets of 4x8 siding, 2 of them for the gable ends, and 3 pieces of Z-flashing. Its shed materials came to $3,080.73 on 33 of 33 lines on Sep 30, 2026, before tax and delivery. This sum mixes two stores: Z-flashing is priced at Home Depot, Hamilton Mill store (ZIP 30011), Sep 30, 2026; every other line at Home Depot, Bronx Terminal store, Sep 30, 2026. The gravel base is site prep, priced apart: $737.58 in bags, and bulk is typically cheaper.

On our gable plans the front and back walls are the gable ends. They fit between the two side walls, which run the full depth and carry the rafters. Frame the gable wall like any other wall up to its double top plate, then stand gable studs on the plate under the end rafters, each cut with a long point to the roof slope: the 10x12 has 6 per end at 16 in on center. The siding panels for the triangle meet the wall panels at the top plate over Z-flashing. The wall framing guide covers layout and raising.

It depends on where you live. The 2021 International Residential Code model text exempts one-story detached accessory structures up to 200 square feet from a building permit, California's code sets 120, and cities set their own limits. Of our gable plans, 13 are 200 sq ft or less (up to the 10x20 gable) and 3 are larger (12x20 gable, 12x24 gable, 16x20 gable). Check with your building department first; the shed permits guide explains what to ask.
